The Dfinity project is network-driven through blockchain technology, with which it tries to create a computer under the concept of cloud computing (cloud computing). With this idea, the aim is to offer a totally decentralized, secure, and functional type of network that allows the deployment of private and public applications at low cost and an integrated economic system thanks to blockchain technology and its native ICP token.

A little history of Dfinity

With the SETI@HOME project in 1999, it was already possible to see the great potential that this type of system presents; for example, hundreds of gigabytes of information needed to be processed daily. There were not enough resources; SETI@HOME solved the problem. The University of Berkeley implemented the BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure of Network Computing) platform. They created a simple program that could be installed on any computer and provide computing power from there.

This computing power is then used to analyze all the data from that “great powerful distributed computer” (like a supercomputer of the time), generating the advantage of not spending money on purchasing a supercomputer, which was very important for SETI. It is important to note that SETI is an acronym that means “search for extraterrestrial intelligence” in English. Its purpose is to analyze various radio signals, looking for signals of extraterrestrial intelligence.

Birth and goals of Dfinity

To radically change the conception of the blockchain, its capacity, and scope, the institution Dfinity Foundation emerged in Switzerland in 2017, which had a capital of 60 million dollars for its development. The main aim of Dfinity is to create a “cloud” that works on the blockchain infrastructure (which is known as Internet Computer or IC), which has the ability to join the current internet and deploy public and private software (of global reach) that is integrated into a secure, transactional and open development access structure for all. This means that when you access Dfinity, you are entering the “login” of a global computer. In this way, we also have access to its applications, which we can use safely from any device with internet access: Smartphone, Tablet, or PC, even Smart TV.

IC is an interoperable system, which can interact with other protocols and exchanging information with them in a native or extensible way; additionally, the network is mnemonic and relational, this means that it offers the possibility of creating applications that do not require a “database” to access and maintain the information, streamlining operations, and allowing creating autonomous and versatile systems.
